Clerics

Overview

Clerics are a relatively new class in Majeria having only truly surfaced (or re-surfaced) since The Mage Rebellion. Their presence is linked to how dramatically Majeria has changed since those events as they bring with them something not known in this world for quite some time: faith.

History

Excerpts from Josiah Darken’s Treatise on Majeria’s Holiest

…While not known for certain, most Majerian historians believe Clerics (or some variation of them) probably existed hundreds or thousands of years ago. Those brave enough to adventure there have found ruins in the Holy Lands many believe were temples built for the Gods. It is safe to assume men and women of faith tended to them and these individuals were the early Clerics. As the Gods drifted further and further from the world, so did their followers. With their absence, divine magic began to fade. Eventually, most traces of this power disappeared and with it, the devotees…

…The people turned towards something more tangible to worship. Essence filled the void and our folly would be elevating those that shaped it to god-like proportions. We Majerians so relished our Mages that eventually they also believed themselves to be gods…

…Since the Grand Betrayal, Lightbearers, Shadowtheists, and Darkbringers have spread their message across the whole of Majeria. Temples to Light, Shadow and Darkness have been built with much fanfare so new worshipers may meet together en masse. Clerics now hold important roles in local governments offering their divine wisdom in areas of politics. Most importantly, they have taken up the mantle of our protectors; keeping the hated Mages in line and ferreting out those who would not repay their debt to society. Their presence helps unify people in a time of great uncertainty, in the wake of extensive collapse. Where the Essence has failed us we pray its creators will prevail…

…As is the nature of non-luminous beings, there are many who hold suspicion against those of faith. They question their motives, dismiss their benevolence and reject their new magics. Some even cast doubt upon the existence of the Gods themselves. Then there are radicals who say the very Essence is angered by their presence. Purist attitudes seem to be developing toward Clerics in Majeria Proper and that is a dangerous thing. Have we learned nothing from our isolated neighbors? Clerics represent the future, not a repeat of the mistakes of the past. After all, there is little use in doubting their intentions when they must answer to a higher power…
